The physicist Heinrich Hertz, born in Hamburg (1857 - 1894), discovered electromagnetic waves. His scientific works formed the basis for radio and television technology.

The Heinrich-Hertz-School is the only "kooperative Gesamtschule" in Hamburg. The school was founded in the year 1968 by the combining of two schools:
- Haupt- and Realschule for boys and girls at the Voßberg (founded 1886),
- Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium (founded 1907 as Realgymnasium at Alsterkamp in Harvestehude).
The building of the Lichtwark-school (founded 1919) became the new home of the Heinrich-Hertz-school.

Since 1970 there are blind pupils in our school, who are integrated in normal classes.
